Cosmic ray abundance measurements with the CAKE balloon experiment

چکیده

We present the results from the CAKE (Cosmic Abundance below Knee Energy) balloon experiment which uses nuclear track detectors. The final experiment goal is the determination of the charge spectrum of CR nuclei with Z > 30 in the primary cosmic radiation. The detector, which has a geometric acceptance of ∼ 1.7 msr, was exposed in a trans-mediterranean stratospheric balloon flight. Calibrations of the detectors used (CR39 and Lexan), scanning strategies and algorithms for tracking particles in an automatic mode are presented. The present status of the results is discussed

Measurements of cosmic-ray secondary nuclei at high energies with the first flight of the CREAM balloon-borne experiment

We present new measurements of heavy cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies performed during the first flight of the balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM (Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass). This instrument uses multiple charge detectors Preprint submitted to Elsevier 12 August 2008 and a transition radiation detector to provide the first high accuracy measurements of the relative abundances of e...

Abundance measurements of Zn, Ga, Ge, & Se from the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) experiment on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite

The cosmic ray elemental abundances of 30Zn, 31Ga, 32Ge, and 34Se provide important tests of the model of the OB-association origin of galactic cosmic rays that has resulted from previous ACE measurements of the neon and iron isotopes and which appears to be confirmed by elemental abundances of Zn, Ga, Ge, and Se measured by the balloon-borne Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder (TIGER). These ...

Approaching the knee – balloon-borne observations of cosmic ray composition

Below the knee in the cosmic ray spectrum, balloon and spacecraft experiments offer the capability of direct composition and energy measurements on the primary particles. A major difficulty is obtaining enough exposure to extend the range of direct measurements sufficiently high in energy to permit overlap with ground-based observations. Presently, balloon and space measurements extend only up ...

Cosmic-ray energetics and mass (CREAM) balloon project

The cosmic-ray energetics and mass (CREAM) investigation is designed to measure cosmic-ray composition to the supernova energy scale of 10 eV in a series of ultra long duration balloon (ULDB) flights. The first flight is planned to be launched from Antarctica in December 2004. The goal is to observe cosmic-ray spectral features and/or abundance changes that might signify a limit to supernova ac...
